Road to LUSAKA
Kigali - Dar es Salaam - Lusaka - Harare - Beira
Electric Expedition May/June 2026
EAST & SOUTHERN AFRICA ROUTE
The East and Southern African corridor network is becoming increasingly important for regional trade, logistics, mining exports, and economic integration across the continent. Connecting Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique through key sections of the Central Corridor and Trans-African Highways 4 and 9, these routes form a critical backbone for cross-border movement and regional connectivity.
The Road to Lusaka expedition, part of the wider Road to Africa initiative, explores the potential of electrifying these strategic transport corridors through a cross-border EV journey across East and Southern Africa.
The expedition will begin in Kigali, Rwanda, before travelling through Tanzania along the Central Corridor to Dar es Salaam. From there, the route continues toward Zambia through Trans-African Highway 4, reaching Lusaka and extending north to Kasumbalesa at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The journey will then continue south through Zimbabwe toward Beira in Mozambique along Trans-African Highway 9.
The expedition aims to document infrastructure readiness, charging opportunities, border crossings, logistics systems, and the broader potential for sustainable transport and corridor electrification across Africa.
E-mobility is becoming increasingly visible across Africa’s cities, where electric motorbikes, charging stations, and clean logistics solutions are reshaping urban transport. Yet across many of the trade corridors that connect the continent, electric mobility infrastructure and cross-border charging ecosystems remain largely undeveloped.
The Road to Lusaka expedition explores how clean transport and electric mobility can extend beyond major urban centres and into the regional corridors that sustain trade, logistics, and economic integration across East and Southern Africa.
Beginning in Kigali and travelling through Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, the journey follows key sections of the Central Corridor and Trans-African Highways 4 and 9, connecting major trade routes, border crossings, industrial hubs, and logistics corridors.
Through stakeholder engagement, public dialogue, and collaboration with local ecosystem actors, the initiative highlights both the opportunities and the challenges of electrifying regional transport systems while contributing to wider discussions around sustainable mobility, regional integration, and the future of cross-border trade across Africa.
